For All the Christians Boycotting The Golden Compass
For all of you, and those of you that I know that have decided to boycott The Golden Compass or the books because your church “told you to” or because your church filled you with false information, such as the author said on TV that he was trying to trick children, which he never said…. you should study your facts and not believe everything you hear. This is a good read for you, it puts the facts quite plainly (be sure to read both letters)-

Also, you shouldn’t judge something with such devout opinions if you haven’t seen it or read it yourself. I have recently watched the movie and I am reading the books, it did not appear to be anti-christian at all. If you want to call this movie or the books anti-christian you would have to categorize almost all fantasy with it, and just never view anything in that genre. It is good to think for yourself sometimes, and make your own judgements instead of just automatically listening to the opinion of others. If you are of this opinion I suggest you watch the movie or read the books, and then see if you still feel the same.
I loved the movie, I heard the uproar the Christian churches made over this last fall. The first two letters on the page, expecially the one from Donna Freitas are very good to read.
I would categorize the books as more anti-organized religion than anti-Christian specifically. The movie more or less removed these elements, but they are undeniably there in the books. And if I strongly objected to the books (which I don’t, though I am a Christian), I would certainly not support them by seeing the movie, as stripped of controversial matters as they might be.
Well my point is that most people saying this haven’t even read the books. They say it because their church told them this. And if you read the letters I posted you can see a different view. I do not even see it as anti-organized religion, but as anti- anything that tries to force you to do as they say without the opportunity to form your own opinion or views.
Interesting point. This is a repeat of the uproar that happened when the movie Dogma came out. All the Catholics threw a fit.
I went and saw that movie with a bunch of Lutherans, we loved it.
Yeah, I remember Dogma, that was a pretty funny movie. We just watched The Golden Compass, and after all the uproar I expected all this christian hate in it, and there wasn’t any… I just kept waiting… It was a very good movie, I can’t wait to read the books. Audrey even sat through the movie which was amazing. I’m going to read the books to the girls.
I may have to watch the movie some time on my own. Let me know how the books turn out. I may have to borrow them.
Audrey told me the witch looks like me… but she also told me that the stepmother in Enchated looked like me.. I don’t know what she is trying to say exactly… haha
Wonder why Christian churches didn’t ask for a boycott of the movie Elizabeth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127536/
The movie displays in graphic detail the butchery metted out by Christians during these times. This movie is far more damaging to Christians than Golden Compass will ever be. But since the movie is based on historical events of the time how could they refute this is not the truth of how religion works in the real world.
I watched Golden Compass and came away fairly unimpressed but no more resentful of Christians than before I watched it. It did represent a society that tried to repress a population, but that was no revelation to me. If the Christians are upset about this movie it is because it a fictional depiction of historical truth.
I can’t say the Golden Compass was anything near LOTR or Narnia for that matter. But with the lack of good fantasy movies, and having a somewhat interesting take on everything, the GC was pretty enjoyable. I am looking forward to the next two.
